After years of accumulating gear and routing things ad hoc, I finally sat down and documented the full signal chain for the studio. This is the authoritative reference for how everything connects: production desk, DJ booth, monitoring, and the digital paths in between.
Power-On Sequence
Order matters here. Getting this wrong means speaker pops, USB devices not recognized, or the AudioFuse initializing before the iMac is ready to claim it.
- iMac (boot fully first)
- Arturia AudioFuse 16Rig
- Instruments and controllers: MicroFreak, TR-8S, Push 3, SP-404 MK2
- Yamaha MG16X CV
- KRK Subwoofer then KRK Monitors (last on, first off)
- DJ gear: CDJ-3000s, DJM-A9
System Architecture
Everything feeds into the Yamaha MG16X CV as the central analog hub. The mixer stereo out routes to the KRK sub/monitor crossover for monitoring and into the Arturia AudioFuse 16Rig inputs 1/2 for recording into the iMac. The AudioFuse connects directly to the iMac USB-C port with no hub in between for maximum bandwidth.
Signal Routing
| Device | Audio Connection | MIDI / Data | Purpose |
|---|---|---|---|
| Arturia MicroFreak | TRS-to-Dual-TS Y-Cable → MG16X 9/10 | USB → Production Hub | Stereo patches and sequencing |
| Roland TR-8S | Dual TRS Mix Out L/R → MG16X 13/14 | USB → Hub or Push 3 | Live drums and standalone sync |
| SP-404 MK2 | Dual TRS Line Out → MG16X 15/16 | USB → Production Hub | Sampling and playback hub |
| DJM-A9 | XLR → MG16X 7/8 | USB → iMac direct | DJ-to-production integration |
| Ableton Push 3 | MG16X 5/6 standalone | USB-C → Production Hub | Primary DAW controller |
SP-404 Sampling Loop
The SP-404 receives its input from the MG16X Aux sends, not a dedicated channel. Aux 1 Out goes to SP-404 Line In L and Aux 2 Out to Line In R. To sample any source including CDJs, TR-8S, or MicroFreak, turn up the Aux 1/2 knobs on that channel. For mono sampling disconnect the right cable and set the SP-404 to mono mode.
DJM-A9 Integration
The DJM-A9 runs two parallel paths into the studio simultaneously.
Analog path: DJM-A9 Main Outs XLR into MG16X channels 7/8. This blends the DJ mix with everything else on the mixer for monitoring, recording via the AudioFuse, and sampling via the SP-404 Aux loop.
Digital USB path: DJM-A9 USB direct to iMac via a long high-quality USB-B to USB-C cable up to 16 feet. This enables full Rekordbox HID control and lets the DJM-A9 appear as a USB audio interface in Ableton for direct digital recording of the mix. Avoid running the DJM-A9 through a hub if possible since Pioneer gear is sensitive to hub latency and recognition issues.
Use Pro DJ Link over Ethernet between the CDJ-3000s and DJM-A9 for tempo sync and track sharing. This path is independent of USB and is more reliable for performance.
Ableton Live Configuration
- Audio device: AudioFuse 16Rig
- Buffer size: 128 to 256 for recording, 512 to 1024 for mixing
- MIDI: enable Track, Sync, and Remote for all hardware ports
DJ to Live Production Transition
When moving from a DJ set into a live production session:
- Confirm DJM-A9 is hitting MG16X channels 7/8 cleanly
- Use Aux 1/2 on channels 7/8 to send the DJ mix to the SP-404 for sampling
- Fade in SP-404 playback on channels 15/16 while fading out the DJM-A9
- Open Ableton template and verify AudioFuse 16Rig is active
- Confirm MIDI devices (MicroFreak, TR-8S, SP-404) are recognized
Maintenance Notes
Keep all production gear on one surge-protected strip to minimize ground loop risk. Use balanced XLR or TRS for all long runs and keep instrument USB cables under 6 feet. Update firmware regularly across AudioFuse, TR-8S, MicroFreak, Push 3, SP-404 MK2, and CDJ-3000s since all have active development cycles.
